Go Ellie, go Ellie! She is our third Mixed Special to be featured as one of The Graduates 2012 on It’s Nice That. Check out the lovely write-up and interview with Ms. Andrews here.

Obsessively looking at brands of technology and media Alice Ray created her project on researching corporate branding and its aesthetic qualities. How a brand can seem seductive and artistic but have such a corporate ownership, Alice’s film ‘Softcore Eternal’ looked at the layers used within advertising ‘and the creative urge to want to own the qualities that these layers represent.’ Research and provocatively driven to continue this project theme, Alice intends to develop her work from the allure of commercial branding into a collaborative project ‘World Service Unite’.

What is your favorite book?
I mostly read non-fiction books like The brand handbook by Wally Olins or Culture in the communication age by James Lull. I enjoy reading about subjects where there’s new thought being contributed. At the moment I’m enjoying discussions on Post Internet.

What, if anything, do you listen to/watch when working?
I don’t have particular rules for that but I often get my ideas when I’m working out; I have to keep stopping to write stuff down; and then get back to doing starjumps or something again. I think it’s the adrenaline

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
Maybe I wouldn’t try so hard.

What is completely unique about your work on the course?
I focus on looking outwards rather than inwards. What I create may be biographical at times but I wouldn’t say it’s psychoanalytic. It’s that interest in culture that seems to always be present in my work.

How many sketchbooks have you filled each year?
I have to have at least 5 different sketchbooks going at a time; one is for raw concepts and ideas in written form, which goes with me everywhere; another is for designs and sketches of how ideas can manifest themselves physically; another is for organisation and management; another is for treatments or storyboards, and others consist of research and various studies.

What is the most important thing that you get right in your work?
Being able to communicate is the most important thing for me. I think that passion comes from me never being very good at communicating from a young age. When something in my work is considered and articulated, somebody looking at it can be spoken to through a visual language we are all fluent in. That is what makes my work meaningful; it becoming used as language.

What do you find the most interesting?
Being able to identify what’s going on socially

After three and a half days of sleep-deprived wall building we opened our doors on Thursday evening! Drinks were generously provided by Pernod Absinthe, Saint lager, and Savanna cider. Also of note was the wine which was served in teal and burgundy cups. Hoping everyone enjoys colour coordination as much as we do… We’re still open until Wednesday so come have a look and say hello :) These are some photos Michaela took on Thursday evening.

Hello hello! Massive massive thank you to everyone that came down on Thursday evening, we had a great time. Sorry to anyone that had to queue/couldn’t get in, it was very busy! But we are open now every day 12-6 until Wednesday 11th, so come down and have a proper look.

Tomorrow is the Sunday Market, where there will be stalls from fellow Camberwell students selling lovely printed and handmade things, workshops, and announcing the winners of the Art Against Knives raffle!

Tickets for the raffle are still available to buy until 3.30pm tomorrow afternoon, with the winners being announced from 4. You can get ‘em online, at Mixed Special, and at the Art Against Knives gallery in Boxpark, Shoreditch. £3 for one ticket, £5 for two!

The workshops tomorrow include stamp making and printing, biscuit icing (and eating), and a poo and tooth badge making workshop run by Play-o-logy! There will also be refreshments.

Extremely exciting news has awoken that Grace Helmer, the boss, has been featured on Its Nice That: The Graduates  2012! Go and have a look here to read Grace’s interview and indulge at the sight of her oil paintings, better still come and see them in 3d* at Mixed Special at Red Gallery.

The private view is tonight from 6pm-10pm, with drinks supplied by our generous sponsors Pernod Absinthe, Saint lager, and Savanna cider. The show then continues until next Wednesday 11th July, 12 – 6pm every day.

On Sunday 8th July is the Sunday Market, where we will be announcing the winners of the raffle, so make sure to get your tickets before then! You can buy them on this site, or when you visit the show. There will also be stalls selling illustrated wonders, workshops in biscuit-icing, stamp-making and more, and our pop-up shop.

Annette Messager, love her every single works.

What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Illustration?
Open a restaurant. I do have a blog to record the nice food and write down some my homemade recipes, I really enjoy cooking. [look at it here]
