How to Support Your Child in Their Education

How to Support Your Child in Their Education

by Emma Murray

No matter what stage your child is at in their educational career, it is important as parents to try and support them on their journey. Here are a few ways you can help them at home, not just at school.

Be Well Equipped

Create a space at home where your child can do their homework in. Whether that’s in the bedroom or another office or study room, it’s important that they have access to the right equipment. Nowadays a lot of homework is done online, so it’s important to invest in a Kids Computer for your child to be able to use at home. This will enable them to get homework done, research projects, and even keep in touch with school friends online, depending on their age. Having a printer at home too means they can print out work and projects easily for school. If kids are able to do their homework set for them in a nice environment with access to the resources they need, then this is going to help them greatly.

Create a Healthy Balance

As well as making sure homework gets done, it’s important that children have a work/life balance at home, much like adults do. There are other ways for children to learn at home. Spending quality family time together can be just as important. There are lots of valuable lessons to be learned through playing board games with the family or cooking together. Playing sports outside in the garden is also another great way to spend time together. This not only teaches children skills that they may not necessarily learn through schooling, but it can also help them relax and unwind. A relaxed mind will take in more the next day at school. Perhaps a plan or certain allowed time for technology use would be beneficial, to try and cut down or balance out screen time. Create tech-free times, such as during homework or family dinners.

Fuel Their Minds & Bodies

A healthy breakfast is the best start to the day, and you don’t want to be sending your child into school on an empty stomach. Try and avoid sugar-filled cereals but instead opt for fiber, proteins, calcium, and other important nutrients, as this can help fuel their brains and improve their memory and attention span. Make sure they don’t skip meals and have access to healthy snacks throughout the day. If they are hungry, they are less likely to be able to concentrate in school. Also ensure they have a good night’s sleep and the right amount of sleep for their age. This may mean a ban on electronic devices for an hour or so before bedtime as these can make it harder to fall asleep. A tired child can be more irritable and less likely to learn at school.

So, while having a well-equipped environment at home for children to work in is obviously important, there are also other aspects such as finding time to wind down, eating healthily, and spending quality time together as a family that can be so beneficial to a child and their education.
